Barclays to close branch

February 27 2019

BARCLAYS Bank is to close its Emersons Green branch.

The bank at Unit 7, The Village, opposite Sainsburys, will close in May. Its the three staff are expected to be offered jobs at other branches.
Barclays says it has made the decision as almost nine out of ten customers of the branch are banking online or by phone and nearly half of them regularly use other branches.
It is advising customers that they can use post offices for everyday transactions. The nearest remaining Barclays branches will be in Fishponds and Kingswood.
Barclays Bristol, Somerset and Wiltshire community banking director Mark Hatcliffe said: “The way customers undertake their banking is changing as people increasingly use online, telephone and mobile devices.
“At Barclays Emersons Green branch, customer usage has continued to decline and additionally 86% of our branch customers are also using other ways to do their banking such as online and by telephone.
“On average, nearly half [43%] of our customers now regularly use alternative branches and this figure is higher for our business customers, which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close the branch.
“We hope that the availability of alternative Barclays branches at Fishponds, Kingswood and Yate and access to services at the Post Office including Downend and Staple Hill, along with our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers.”
The bank said it “did not take the decision to close any branch lightly”.
Customers were due to be sent a letter officially notifying them of the decision to close and were being encouraged to talk to staff in the branch about any concerns they might have.
Before closing on May 17, Barclays was also due to “proactively engage” with local businesses over alternative banking arrangements and host ‘tea and teach’ digital banking sessions at the branch.
Asked about the future of staff at the branch, a Barclays spokesperson added: “We will be working with our colleagues on an individual basis with the intention of redeploying them to other branches.”
