Budding performers tread the boards at community centre
A THEATRE group that has recently started running sessions in Lyde Green is looking for recruits.
Affordable Theatre Co (ATC) was set up six years ago after it was realised that bigger stage schools were out pricing families, meaning that it was difficult for some children to be able to attend drama classes and perform in theatres.
The group has moved over to Lyde Green Community Centre from Emersons Green Village Hall and run sessions for two age groups: ATC Minis for 6-11 year olds and ATC Youth 12-21 year olds. At the sessions young people have the chance to learn theatre skills through song, dance, acting and drama games, as well as learn musicals and perform three or four shows a year in various venues around Bristol.
Sarah Haworth is ATC’s production director. She directs, produces, choreographs and musically directs musicals, and wrote and produced the Bristol Gang Show at The Bristol Hippodrome for 10 years. Commenting on the group’s classes at Lyde Green Community Centre, she said: “ATC is one big family, there are beautiful friendships formed between the children and the teenagers alike. We have a huge team of volunteers, and without them we would have to employ sound engineers, lighting designers, wardrobe managers, front of house staff and box office managers and the children’s fees and ticket prices would hike right up!
“Students who come to us grow in confidence, build friendships and learn skills in speaking out loud, timing, team work and so much more than just singing and dancing.”
The group are working on a performance of ‘Summer Holiday’ and last year they performed Shrek, Aladdin, Copacabana and The Wizard of Oz.
ATC holds sessions at Lyde Green Community Centre for 6-11 year olds on Mondays from 5pm – 6:15pm and on Wednesdays from 4pm – 5:30pm, and for 12 – 21 year olds on Wednesdays from 5:30pm – 7pm. There is also a session for both age groups on Saturday mornings from 9am – 10:10am.
Weekly sessions cost £7, but a free taster is offered for the first time a child attends.
