Bus takes spectacular wrong turn
THIS is the damage caused when a double-decker bus took a wrong turn and collided with a building in Downend.
The number 48 service collided with the roof of the Downend Car Wash in Westerleigh Road, near the Hutnsman pub, on the morning of May 30.
One passenger was on board at the time of the incident but both she and the driver were unhurt in the accident. But as the pictures show, the accident could have caused a serious injury or worse to anyone sitting at the front of the top deck.
Operator First West of England has declined to reveal why the bus was on the forecourt, which is next to a bus stop but is on a driveway set back from Westerleigh Road itself.
Managing director James Freeman visited the scene of the crash shortly after it happened and told the Voice the company was investigating.
A First West of England spokesman said: “Our investigation into this incident has concluded and we have taken follow-up action where necessary, in line with our policies and procedures.
“We accepted liability at the time of the incident.”
The company declined to give more details of the nature of the action taken against the driver.
Downend Car Wash manager Yanni Jay said the car wash had been out of action for two days after the accident. As well as damaging the canopy, the collision also caused damage to the main car wash building.
Mr Jay said staff working at the site had been shocked by the incident but he added: “No-one was injured - that’s the good news.”
Repairs are being handled by the companies’ insurers.
