Emersons Green vet Martin is top dog

A VET from Emersons Green has been named as the Vet of the Year at an awards ceremony.

Martin Brice, who owns the Emersons Green Veterinary Surgery on Emerson Way, was given the award after he received nominations from his clients and staff.

Martin qualified as a vet in South Africa in 1995, and spent the start of his career working in Shropshire, Johannesburg, Australia and New Zealand before finally deciding to settle in the UK permanently. He worked in Birmingham and London for a short time, where he became aware of the Emersons Green development being built in Bristol. After passing by with a friend who lived in the city, he decided that the area would be the perfect place to open a veterinary practice.

After Martin joined forces with a fellow vet, the surgery opened its doors in 2000, and the team were delighted to win an award for UK Vet Practice of the Year at the 2011 Petplan Veterinary Awards.

The judging process for the 2018 Petplan Veterinary Awards started in October 2017 with over 22,000 nominations received from across the country, of which 6,000 were for vets.

The awards honour the UK’s most outstanding vets, veterinary nurses, practices, practice managers and support staff and are known as ‘The Oscars’ of the veterinary world.

Martin, who lives in Tytherington with his wife Louise and two daughters,  was praised at the awards ceremony in Birmingham for his leadership skills and compassion.

He said afterwards:  “I got a call back in March to say that I was in the final three for the Vet of the Year category and I couldn’t believe it! I certainly never thought I’d win the award and it’s extremely humbling. I am so grateful for the support of my wonderful staff at Emersons Green Vets – this award is testament to the hard work of the whole team.

“During the time that we have been open we have seen the local community grow and flourish. We’re also one of the very few independent veterinary practices left in Bristol, and after being in business for 18 years it’s so lovely to have validation from my clients too.”

Speaking about Martin’s win, veterinary nurse Rachel Chilcott said: “Everyone at Emersons Green Veterinary Surgery is very proud of Martin and we are over the moon that we now have an award winning boss!

“He thoroughly deserves this award as he goes above and beyond on a daily basis for his clients, patients and employees. The pet owners of Emersons Green are very lucky to have such an excellent, award winning vet on their door step.”
