Families hail the Urbie bus!

A PROJECT to give young people in Emersons Green a place to meet each other has received a positive response.

Emersons Green Town Council decided in March to investigate the provision available for young people within its boundaries.

As part of the investigation, youth work providers within South Gloucestershire were contacted, and the council learned that most services have been cut for financial reasons.

The town council appointed Youth in Sodbury to identify what local services the young people of Emersons Green and Lyde Green would be interested in using. Two youth workers, Emily Crane and Christian Stefanczyk, started working in the area at the end of July.

Since then, the Youth Works project has engaged 38 young people and has helped bring the community together by providing a space for young people to meet and make friends, while taking part in positive activities.

The project has laid on a wide variety of activities, ending the year with a Christmas crafts session and party. It has used the Urbie bus, a mobile base for South Gloucestershire youth services bought by Yate Town Council.

Emily said: “This quarter young people have enjoyed a circus skills workshop, football games, pumpkin carving, walking, henna tattoos, board games, a cinema night, making mocktails (non-alcoholic cocktails) and s’mores (chocolate and marshmallow snacks).

“We will continue to use local venues and the Urbie bus over the winter months and we will be regularly consulting with young people on what kind of activities they would like to do.”

The project has also received positive feedback from the community.

One parent said: “The kids really enjoy coming along and joining in each week.

“My daughter has loved making friends with a girl she wouldn't have met otherwise.

“I think it's a really good idea as there isn't anything else for them to do around here, and hopefully more kids will get involved and make friends on the estate.”
