MP Chris promoted to Universities Minister
KINGSWOOD MP Chris Skidmore has been appointed a government minister.
He has replaced Sam Gyimah as universities and science minister after Mr Gyimah quit his role in protest at Theresa May’s Brexit deal and called for a second referendum.
Mr Skidmore, who previously served as a junior minister in the Cabinet Office before being moved out in a reshuffle in January, was a remain supporter during the 2016 referendum campaign but has since publicly backed Mrs May.
Mr Skidmore will now be charged with coordinating the government’s response to a wide-ranging review of post-18 education in England and ensuring the higher education sector is protected during Brexit.
Writing in his monthly column for the Voice, the MP said: “Having been a minister before, I am delighted to have been appointed to a role of which I have some experience in, having taught history previously at Bristol University before becoming an MP.
“Being Universities and Science Minster is a hugely important task, helping to prepare our country for future challenges and opportunities.”
