New health and fitness club gets green light
A BIG new health and fitness club is set to be built next to Lyde Green after winning planning permission.
The new David Lloyd centre will be built on the opposite side of the Rosary roundabout to the Emersons Green retail park, between the Avon Ring Road and Folly Brook, and should be open before the end of next year.
As reported in previous editions of the Voice, the centre is set to include three weather-protected tennis courts and a show court, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a sauna and steam room, a multi-purpose sports hall, gym facilities, 245 car parking spaces and facilities to park 20 bicycles.
The application has been approved by South Gloucestershire Council’s planning committee, subject to certain conditions being met, such as ensuring that there are no permanent external lights at the site other than those shown on the plans.
Following the announcement that the application had been conditionally approved, residents took to the Lyde Green Local Facebook group to share their views. Comments varied from people expressing their excitement at a local leisure centre finally being built in the area, to others stating that they were concerned that the cost of membership would be too high for them to actually use the facility.
David Lloyd has operated for over 30 years and owns some 86 David Lloyd clubs in the UK.
A spokesman for the company said: “David Lloyd Clubs, the UK’s leading health, fitness and racquets group can confirm that a conditional planning application has been granted to develop a club in Emersons Green.
“Construction will start in the near future, hopefully by the end of the year, and with the club opening before the end of 2019.
“The family-oriented club will enhance the Lyde Green development, providing a wide range of unrivalled facilities for local residents and around 80 new jobs.”
