A YOUNG cricketer had a coaching session with World Cup-winning England bowler Jofra Archer.

Tour Ponting, from Carsons and Mangotsfield Cricket Club, even faced some balls from the fast bowler in the nets.

Promising young player Tour was put forward following his performances for Gloucestershire Cricket Foundation teams for an ACE scholarship, to support children who come from a black and ethnic minority background in cricket.

Tour was successful in his trial and awarded a scholarship for the coming season. The highlight was to spend a day at the cricket performance centre at Loughborough University.

The day began by being introduced to well known ex-players and commentators Ian Ward and Charlotte Edwards.

But the highlight was when Archer, who played in all England's matches in the 2019 Cricket World Cup and bowled the super over which saw England win the closest-ever final against New Zealand, was introduced.

The young players had a question and answer session with the guests before going down to the nets, where they had a coaching session which covered batting, bowling and fielding.

Tour said: “Jofra was really helpful in talking to me about my run-up and how to grip the ball.

"He also bowled to me. I tried to think of him as any other bowler.

"I managed to hit him for 3 runs, played out a couple of dot balls before hitting him for 4!

"It was a day I’ll never forget, and great to be given this opportunity.”

Tour is part of the successful youth academy at Carsons and Mangotsfield CC, which has seen the club flourish over the last few seasons.

The club will be taking part in the All Stars coaching sessions in May and June as well as running boys and girls’ teams, up to U19 level.

Outside training will commence in early April when Damian Forder will be coaching the adult section of the club.
